Day 2: Climate-friendly

More physical activity is not only good for our health; it also helps the environment and the climate as a whole. Toxic exhaust fumes can be avoided with a simple activity: Less driving, more cycling. This is exactly what many pupils and teachers did voluntarily to set an example for climate-conscious living. We set off together from the Europagymnasium in the direction of Gymnich to the Gymnicher Mühle nature reserve. Our guests from the south were amazed when they saw the beautiful and varied greenery along the Erft river on the way there.

In the Gymnicher Mühle, two large groups went through different programme points in various workshops. One group, for example, looked at how many materials actually contain environmentally harmful plastic. The other group learned how rivers have developed over the centuries - and how we humans have deliberately diverted and thus changed the course of rivers, including the Erft.

Tag 1: Klimafreundlich

Mehr körperliche Bewegung – das ist nicht nur für unsere Gesundheit förderlich; wir unterstützen somit auch unsere Umwelt und das Klima insgesamt. Giftige Abgase kann man nämlich mit einer simplen Tätigkeit vermeiden: Weniger Autofahren, mehr Fahrradfahren. Genau das taten viele Schüler:innen wie auch Lehrkräfte freiwillig, um ein Zeichen für ein klimabewusstes Leben zu setzen. Gemeinsam starten wir vom Europagymnasium Richtung Gymnich zum Naturschutzpark „Gymnicher Mühle“. Unsere südländischen Gäste staunen nicht schlecht, als sie das schöne und vielfältige Grün auf dem Weg dorthin entlang der Erft erblicken.

In der Gymnicher Mühle werden zwei Großgruppen in verschiedene Workshops unterschiedliche Programmpunkte durchlaufen. Eine Gruppe befasst sich beispielsweise damit, in wie vielen Materialien tatsächlich das umweltschädliche Plastik verbaut ist. Die andere Gruppe darf erfahren, wie sich Flüsse über die Jahrhunderte entwickelten – und wie wir Menschen die Flussbahnen, auch der Erft, bewusst umgelenkt und somit verändert haben.

Ein gemeinsames Picknick unter herbstlichem Sonnenschein in der Natur Gymnichs runden den lehrreichen Tag schließlich ab.
